The Asheville Jung Center is a Global Jungian Community

Steven Buser, MD contacted me in order for me to pass on this landmark event hosted by The Asheville Jung Center.

A Global Internet Seminar: Viewable live from any home computer or group site.
Friday, September 10, 2010
11 am to 5 pm Eastern US

The Title is: Symbols and Individuation in Global Politics: The Case of Barack Obama

The world stage is a dramatic place full of actors surging with archetypal energies, which not only affect the world’s leaders but the countries, regions and other tribes that they serve. Caught in these unconscious storms, most countries and their leaders have no idea of the archetypal patterns into which they have fallen or how to contain them in a safe and productive manner. Instead they get “acted out” and in their most vicious forms involve troop deployments, IED’s, smart bombs, or even flying airplanes into skyscrapers. Perhaps more than any other recent leader in history, Barack Obama carries a staggering magnitude of projected fears, hopes and dreams; so much so that he was awarded a Noble Peace Prize before barely lifting a finger. Obama’s success or failure will to a large degree rest on his ability to become aware of and exploit in a positive manner these archetypal forces. In order to have true international progress, the warring polarities between the West and the rest of the world must somehow be transcended into a new reality, a “global individuation” of sorts.

Join us in this 5 hour live seminar from Zurich and California where 3 world leading Jungian analysts, Murray Stein, Bernard Sartorius and Thomas Singer, will explore these profoundly important questions.

For the first time ever this (and hopefully future seminars) WILL BE OFFERED LIVE TO ALL COMPUTERS WORLD WIDE. As long as your computer has high speed internet and can access our web streaming viewer, you will be able to watch the seminar live and  email questions to our presenter in Zurich in real time.

Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) Announces AppSec USA 2010, the Premiere Web Application Security Conference in North America

Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) announces AppSec USA, which will be held from September 7 to 10 at the University of California at Irvine.
The conference consists of two days of in-depth training classes on September 7 and 8, followed by two days of plenary sessions on September 9 and 10. BOF (Birds of Feathers) sessions and panel discussions round out the conference offerings.

Online details: http://www.owasp.org/index.php/Main_Page

Jeff Williams, keynote speaker and Chairman of OWASP Foundation notes, “Software is simultaneously getting radically more critical, complex, and interconnected. This creates a perfect storm for attackers, who are having a field day with our systems. We will never hack our way secure. Instead, we need to change the way we think about software, build software, and buy software. OWASP’s audacious goal is to reach all developers everywhere and help them build rugged code – because our future depends on it.”

Williams continues, “I’ve attended many OWASP AppSec Conferences, and they truly bring together the leading researchers, innovators, and community leaders to focus on application security in a free and open noncommercial forum. There’s a fantastic sense of community and shared purpose. We encourage anyone interested in secure code to come and find out what application security is all about. Our 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status allows us to keep prices extremely low.”

Another keynote speaker, Bill Cheswick, is a well known security researcher with AT&T Research; his very popular book Firewalls and Internet Security has influenced many security practitioners.

The third keynote speaker, David Rice, is an internationally recognized information security professional. Mr. Rice, author of the highly acclaimed book, Geekonomics, which promotes awareness of the true cost of insecure software, made significant contributions to advance the security of our nation’s critical infrastructure.

HD Moore, the final keynote speaker, is widely acclaimed for his creativity and technical skills, and brings a distinct perspective to AppSec. Mr. Moore’s best known contribution to the security community is the Metasploit Project, an open-source project which can be used to find vulnerabilities in computer systems in order to protect or exploit them.

Irvine, located in Southern California, is beautiful year-round and the UC Irvine campus offers famous architecture, a large park, art, and modern facilities in a pleasant environment. Irvine is situated in the heart of Orange County and is next door to Los Angeles, San Diego, and many other attractions.

Richard Greenberg, Co-Chair of Conference Organizing Committee, says, “If you can only get away from the office for one conference, this is it. We all are aware of the insidious exploits taking advantage of all types of application security vulnerabilities.”

Greenberg continues, “We need to learn from the experts in order to counter the attacks – to build solid and secure applications. The knowledge we pride ourselves of amassing is insufficient to meet the new evolving threats. Only by sharing our collective wisdom and experiences can we realistically expect to protect our assets.”

The conference is currently accepting papers and presentations until June 30, 2010. The conference is also soliciting sponsors of different levels.

Top Cyber-Warrior Ira Winkler calls for Common Sense to Secure Computing Infrastructure Will Give Keynote Address at 2nd Annual Information Security Summit Hosted by the Los Angeles Chapter of ISSA

Los Angeles (June 2, 2010) — Cyber-Warrior Ira Winkler said today “there can be no common sense without common knowledge” when addressing the deficiencies of computer security. According to Winkler:

When everyone reads about computer attacks, you get the impression that they are committed by computer geniuses. The reality is that just about all hackers are opportunists, who take advantage of completely preventable problems. Computer security is really common sense. Unfortunately, there can be no common sense without common knowledge. ISSA Los Angeles is providing common knowledge so that businesses and our country as a whole can start exercising common sense.

To register, please visit: http://www.issa-la.org.

Mr. Winkler, the author of Spies Among Us and Zen and the Art of Information Security, has been called a “Modern Day James Bond” by the media. He will speak at the 2nd Annual Information Security Summit. The theme of this year’s Summit is Unleashing the Power of Collaboration; collaboration between, executives, Information Technology professionals and Information Security experts. The Summit will be held Wednesday June 16, 2010 at 7:30 AM on the UCLA Campus, hosted by UCLA Extension.

Stan Stahl, ISSA-LA President, information security pioneer and noted consultant states, “The Summit is the only educational forum in Los Angeles specifically designed to encourage participation and interaction among three, vital information security constituencies: (1) business executives, senior business managers, and their trusted advisors; (2) technical IT personnel with responsibility for information systems and the data they contain; and (3) information security practitioners with responsibility for ensuring the security of sensitive information.”

“It’s vital to us that our program appeal to business executives and other senior business managers since they have traditionally thought about information security as a technical matter. That’s no longer true and it’s important that ISSA-LA help our business leaders understand this. Otherwise, how are they to properly protect their organizations? We feel very strongly that part of our mission is to raise management awareness and understanding about the rising cybercrime challenge. After all, they’re the ones with ultimate responsibility if anything goes wrong.”

“Because of the importance of helping non-technical management understand their cybercrime challenges we invited Brian Krebs to be one of our keynote speakers,” Dr. Stahl continued. “Brian is the #1 cybersecurity journalist in America and his blog Krebsonsecurity.com was recently named the best non-technical security blog.”

Following Mr. Krebs keynote address, the executives in attendance will be provided a two hour cybercrime executive briefing featuring a distinguished panel of information security experts. Additional tracks will be held throughout the day aimed at providing ongoing education to IT and information security personnel.

“We also have to help the IT community understand the changing face of cybercrime,” continued Dr. Stahl. “Yesterday’s defenses don’t work against the worst of today’s cyber-attacks. The Summit is the perfect place for our community’s IT professionals to learn what they must do to stay ahead of the cybercriminals. IT professionals will learn how to meet the latest cyber challenges from industry leaders and get to talk to more than 25 information security vendors.”

The Information Security Summit is part of ISSA-LA’s important community outreach program. The goal of the program is to help our community stay safe from cybercrime by enabling the necessary collaboration between decision makers, technical IT professionals and the information security community. Congratulations to Dr Linda Adele Schultz

On successfully defending her dissertation and becoming Pacifica Graduate Institute’s newest alumni. I am gratetful for the many years of dialog and insight Dr Schultz and I participated in, while at Pacifica.

DISSERTATION TITLE: “The First Bite: An Archetypal Exploration of the Initial Impulse in Compulsive Eating”

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this dissertation is to explore a particular moment in compulsive eating I term the “first bite phenomenon.” In essence, it is comprised of an archetypal energy within an autonomous complex that, when activated, overpowers the ego. This results in an abduction where the sufferer acquiesces, submitting to a literal first bite of food that begins a cycle of compulsive, or emotional, eating.
